Serenity House Communities (SHC) is a recovery community organization founded in 2015 by Tara Moreno-Wallen as a substance use disorder prevention & recovery support service. SHC provides substance use and co-occurring disorder support for men & women in Lapeer & Genesee counties. Services are conducted utilizing a Community Resiliency model that meets participants in their current stage of change and empowers them towards a path of recovery. SHC provides a wide spectrum of services including advocacy and educational events to reduce stigma, recovery coaching and recovery support groups. The organization specializes in the delivery of holistic medicine approaches that range from Recovery Reiki to Yoga & Acupuncture. SHC is committed to promoting change and awareness, reducing stigma and shame by providing a better understanding of recovery. All services and projects conducted by SHC take place in a strategic planning framework that includes attention to assessing the needs of our participants; assessing and building capacity for the benefit of our participants, researching, and applying evidence-based and culturally accepted healing approaches and using outcome and evaluation to drive services, as evidenced by the results of our data collection and analysis. SHC is aware of cultural diversity and provides cultural competency awareness that helps those who are affiliated with SHC to effectively operate within different cultural contexts with sensitivity toward members of other ethnic or cultural groups. This project is part of a growing trend to establish RCO’s across the country. The formation of a Recovery Community Organization also supports peer development, within a Recovery Oriented System of Care framework.

Family is everything to Darci. She treasures being a mom to her daughter and son, considering them her greatest joy. Darci is blessed with amazing friends and family, a support system she cherishes deeply.
Her extensive experience with non-profits, including the American Cancer Society and Whaley Children's Center, drew her to Serenity House. Witnessing the tangible help provided daily, from rides to peer recovery counseling, inspired her to join our team.
Having faced significant loss in the past six years, including her father, sister, and mother, Darci's personal recovery journey fuels her passion for aiding others. She feels honored and excited to be part of Serenity House, and we are thrilled to have her with us.

Joan is 54 years young. Wife, mother, and daughter. She lives a holistic lifestyle, and loves reiki, energy work and all holistic ways of healing. She loves to travel (she's been to 5 different countries) and experience new cultures. What drew Joan to Serenity House was the compassion everyone has for helping those in recovery. She believes the holistic ways are a much better way of healing than the traditional pharmaceutical way. She loves seeing participants smile when they leave their coach or having people thank Serenity House for all the beautiful classes they offer. She truly loves her job and what Serenity House does for those in recovery.

I enjoy spending quality time with my 2 sons, spending time outdoors, meditating and exploring different holistic modalities. I am thankful to be here with Serenity House Communities and to be able to help others who are on their own journey, no matter where they're at and what that looks like for them, as well as continue working on personal growth within myself. I'm a Certified Peer Recovery Coach and now Serenity House's Peer Recovery Coaching Supervisor! I'm so happy to be a part of this team and be part of what Serenity House stands for.

I worked at New Paths for two years in the women's residential and recovery housing from 2022-2024. My journey to recovery has had many speed bumps and road blocks. I have been to numerous treatment centers, IOP, and outpatient therapy. You name it I have most likely tried it, to stop using drugs and alcohol. I lost my brother to an opioid overdose in 2019, that turned my world upside down, I relapsed and I am lucky to have come out alive. I was arrested multiple times for DUI's, 5 to be exact, I was on my way to prison for 10 years. I called the probation officer that does intake for Sobriety Court and said I must get into this program, I will do whatever it takes. That was 2019, early 2020 I got my 5 DUI I's. I called her again and said I am going to treatment, I'll call you when I get out. Needless to say I am a proud graduate of Genesee County Sobriety Court 2022. That program and Medically Assisted Treatment saved my life. While I was in GCSC I was sent to Serenity House to holistic modalities of Acudetox, Reiki, etc., and I fell in love with it and have been doing it ever since. Now I work here and get to share it with others..
