Recovery awareness and recovery support services are extremely important to encourage healing from addiction. Serenity House of Flint annually hosts the Flint Recovery Walk & Rally during September’s recovery month to celebrate the reality of recovery and communicate the need for services and support to make recovery a top priority so those with addiction can recover and contribute meaningfully to our community. It is estimated from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health that in 2010 close to 21 million who needed addiction recovery help at a substance abuse facility were not able to receive it. It is also estimated that 23 million Americans are living in long-term recovery. Participants include people in recovery from addiction to alcohol and drugs, as well as their families, friends, addiction-treatment professionals, elected officials and other allies as part of National Recovery Month. Our attendance has been approximately 1,500 people since the event began five years ago. We reach even more through marketing and a strong online media presence.
Arts and music are excellent healing modalities when it comes to addiction recovery. The Flint Recovery Arts & Music show is an annual awareness event held every March in downtown Flint with the intent to bring attention to arts and music and holistic modalities for addiction recovery. According to UNITE to Face Addiction coordinator Greg Williams, 83 million Americans are touched directly or indirectly by addiction. Events like this are necessary to eradicate the stigma of addiction and recovery and to act as an outreach platform for those who are still suffering from addiction.
So far we have served about 1,000 people since the event began in 2016 and have reached many more people through news outlets and marketing campaigns.
The Serenity House Community Outreach is a group of certified enthusiastic, dedicated, recovery coaches and holistic practitioners whose desire is to raise awareness and availability of the benefits of holstic options through community service and education.
We are currently working diligently to find public institutions and venues in which we can serve offering holistic options to underserved populations, those who serve this population, as well as introducing the benefits holistic care to mainstream medical institutions.
Since its launch in mid March we have educated and served well over 200 people at Crossover Ministries, Wellness Services of Flint, Kindred Hospice staff and nurses, UAW’s Soberfest, McLaren Regional Medical Center’s Hospitality House fundraising event as well as The Holistic Healing Hour sponsored by The Serenity House of Flint for recovery coaches, clinicians, and those who serve the underprivileged in Genesee County.
We expect these numbers to grow rapidly as we gain popularity and add new venues such as the Odyssey House Intensive Outpatient Rehab and start working with the patients and caretakers enrolled in the care of Kindred Hospice.
Additionally, the Serenity House Community Outreach provides invaluable practice opportunities for the practitioners in working with the public as well as volunteering for the betterment of the community at large.

Talking circles are based on the sacred tradition of sharing circles. People leading a traditional sharing circle will have a blessing from an Elder to do this, and will use special prayers and sacred objects in the ceremony.
The purpose of the less formal talking circle is to create a safe environment in which people can share their point of view with others. In a Talking Circle, each one is equal and each one belongs. Participants in a Talking Circle learn to listen and respect the views of others. The intention is to open hearts to understand and connect with one another.
Talking Circles are rooted in the discussions of harm reduction, spirituality, codependency, the nature of fear, self-love, and letting go. Talking Circles are every Friday night following the Holistic Healing Hour.
This program is designed to introduce people to Aromatherapy and essential oils and how they can foster a better relationship with their recovery plan. Aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine practice utilizing fragrant/aromatic essential oils that are derived from a wide variety of healing plants. When inhaled or applied to the skin, therapeutic-grade essential oils have been shown to help people overcome various health problems without the need for medications.
Aromatherapy can be performed in several different ways:
Diffusing a combination of essential oils into the air (or just one single oil)
Inhaling oils through the nostrils directly off a cloth or from the bottle
Receiving massage therapy utilizing oils
Soaking in an oil-infused bath
Rubbing oils directly onto the skin
Using oils as household cleaners
Research shows that anyone with the following health conditions can likely benefit from aromatherapy:
The key to achieving results from aromatherapy is to use pure, therapeutic-grade oils rather than those with synthetic ingredients or fragrances. The effectiveness of aromatherapy practices always depends on the quality of the oils used, plus the dosage. Every first Friday of the month we offer no-cost Adult Coloring & Aromatherapy.
Several thousand years ago, East Asian physicians discovered that the body forms disharmonies as a result of the various physical and mental stresses of life. Oriental medical theory explains these disharmonies as an imbalance of opposing forces called yin and yang. This imbalance disrupts the movement of the body’s vital energy (qi) along the meridian pathways, which are channels through which the body’s energy is thought to flow. Auricular Acupuncture restores the smooth flow of qi by inserting five hair-like needles at specific points in the ear. Auricular acupuncture can return the body to its natural balance, detoxify the body, and promote the body’s ability to heal itself.
Drumming is an ancient practice. Cultures from all over the world have used drums for healing practices. In Shamanism, drumming is used as a healing meditative journeying practice. The repetitive beats invoke a trance-like state that is a deeper meditative journey where the healing process takes hold and continues even after the journey is over.
Drumming connects you to the earth, her heartbeat, her vibration. You sync every fiber of your being to the beats and find all your negative energy and negative emotions being released. Drumming generates a sense of oneness and community at the same time. You are able to connect both sides of your brain harmoniously during drumming. It is an analytically artistic expression.
Drumming is everywhere; every creature large and small drums. From the smallest termite to the mammoth elephant, even our aquatic friends. The trees even make percussive sounds to communicate through their roots. Drumming is also a lot of fun!
Drumming has many health benefits:
You need no special skills to join in; just yourself along with an open heart and mind. Most people walk away from a drum circle feeling energized and notice a sharp increase of self-esteem and self-awareness.
